Classification of financial institutions

Financial institutions are divided by Finance Denmark according to size, using the same method as the Danish FSA. Financial institutions are divided into four groups according to the size of the banks’ capital employed.

The classification is used by the Danish FSA in connection with inspecting banks. The largest banks are subject to more monitoring and therefore must send more documentation to the Danish FSA than smaller banks. This means that the smaller banks have fewer administrative burdens in connection with monitoring.

In 2015, the classification consisted of:

Group 1: Financial institutions with capital employed of DKK 65 billion and up.

Group 2: Financial institutions with capital employed of DKK 12 billion and up to DKK 50 billion

Group 3: Financial institutions with capital employed of DKK 500 million and up to DKK 10 billion.

Group 4: Financial institutions with capital employed of under DKK 500 million.

Capital employed is defined as the sum of deposits, equity, issued bonds and subordinated capital investments. This page also shows the same institutions divided according to loans, deposits and balance.

The financial data is based purely on the individual institution’s banking business and not its overall group undertaking.

Here are the 18 financial institutions that make up groups 1 and 2 in the Danish FSA’s classification at the end of 2015. The financial data is from the institutions’ annual accounts for 2015.
